Authentic, Professional, Top Quality True Okinawan Karate...

Our students are very blessed at Franz Karate to have the opportunity to train in true form of Okinawan Karate. The system we teach is Shorin Ryu Shorinkan which is one of the oldest and most effective systems of Karate every devised. As a fact, over 80% of the Karate systems available today came from Shorin Ryu Karate. By studying the pure source of Karate you get what is commonly referred to as Dento Karate. Dento Karate is the original form of Karate practiced for self preservation. This means that you get a pure Karate experience with complete training and knowledge direct from Okinawa.

Master Franz travels to Okinawa each year to be reviewed and for more training. While attending classes there he is training directly under the supervision of Minoru Nakazato Hanshi, the son of Shugoro Nakazato Hanshi who founded the Shorinkan branch of Shorin Ryu. This translates back to you, the student, with the most up to date and authentic training you will find anywhere in true Okinawan Karate.

Shorin Ryu Shorinkan is one of the largest systems of Karate practiced throughout the world today. This offers students a chance to attend seminars, training camps and even travel with Franz Shihan to Okinawa to train in the birthplace of Karate! The long list of benefits gained from true traditional Okinawan Karate training is astounding! People of all ages, from as young as 4 all the way into their late senior years have discovered how wonderful Karate training is for their health, body and mind. Our dojo, Franz Karate, was opened on December 1, 1991 in Hicksville, Ohio. Master Franz taught classes four days a week at that dojo from 1991 until 1999. During the same time we had satellite programs in Auburn and Kendallville, Indiana. In 2001 Master Franz moved to Bryan, Ohio and began teaching privately in his home dojo. When class sizes grew beyond the capacity of his home dojo he rented a small building and opened a public dojo. Class sizes swelled due to the teaching methods and family environment of the traditional dojo we run. In the summer of 2016 Master Franz purchased the building in Bryan where classes are now held. In November of 2016 Master Franz opened another dojo in downtown Auburn, Indiana to accommodate the students who had been traveling from there to Bryan to train.

Franz Karate is considered one of the leading martial arts schools in the United States today. The dojo has attained accolades including "school of the year" awards, Hall of Fame awards and been rated consistently in the top 5 of the Professional Karate Commission's outstanding schools for many years. All this said our dojo is not a "commercial" school. We value the lessons taught, you cannot buy belts from us and our students will excel at their Karate properly. Master Franz always says "There is no amount of money that can replace integrity" and our philosophy holds true to that in how we teach martial arts. Our classes are organized, structured, fun, sweaty, hard and great all rolled into one.

Our students range in ages 3 to their 70's. Our traditional Karate program is developed to have something for everyone regardless of age and we look forward to seeing you at the dojo.
